Frequently asked questions.

Do I need a referral from a doctor to start counselling?

No referral is required to access counselling. You can contact Siluna Mind directly to book a session, whether in-person or online.

How do I choose between individual, couples, or family counselling?

The right option depends on your needs. Individual counselling focuses on personal growth and emotional wellbeing. Couples counselling addresses relationship issues. Family counselling helps improve communication and resolve conflicts among family members.

What should I expect in my first counselling session?

The first session is an opportunity to discuss your concerns, set goals, and understand the counselling process. You’ll meet in a safe, confidential space where the counsellor listens, reflects, and helps you plan your next steps.

Can counselling help with relationship conflict after separation or divorce?

Yes. Counselling provides strategies to manage emotions, improve co-parenting communication, and navigate post-separation challenges. Support is available both individually and alongside mediation services.

Can my partner and I have separate counselling sessions during couples therapy?

No, it wouldn’t be ethical to provide individual counselling to either partner while we are engaged in couples therapy together. In couples counselling, the focus is on the relationship as a whole, not on either individual separately.

If we were to counsel one partner individually, it could create a conflict of interest, especially if private information is shared that the other partner isn’t aware of. This could compromise trust and neutrality within the joint sessions.

For that reason, we recommend each partner seek an independent counsellor for individual sessions if you’d like separate support alongside your couples counselling.

What if my partner doesn’t want to attend couples counselling?

You can still come on your own. Individual sessions can help you understand patterns in the relationship and explore your next steps.

How does couples counselling work and when should we try it?

Couples counselling focuses on communication, conflict resolution, and strengthening relationships. It’s ideal if you are experiencing ongoing disagreements, trust issues, or significant life transitions. Our relationship counselling in Australia helps both partners feel heard and supported in a neutral space.

Can counselling support me through grief, loss, or bereavement?

Yes. Grief counselling helps you navigate loss, process emotions, and adjust to life changes. Sessions are compassionate, providing coping strategies and guidance for healing.

What can I expect in my first counselling session?

Your first session focuses on understanding your situation, goals, and what you hope to achieve from counselling. It’s a space to talk openly - no pressure, no judgment.

How long are sessions, and how often do I need to come?

Most sessions run for 50 minutes. The frequency depends on your goals - some clients prefer weekly sessions, while others attend every two to three weeks.

To achieve the best outcomes, we offer counselling packages of six sessions. Over these six sessions, we develop a personalised counselling plan and work steadily toward your goals. You can always extend your journey with an additional package or individual sessions as needed.

Do I need to commit to multiple counselling sessions or packages?

While some clients benefit from ongoing sessions, our structured packages of six sessions allow for focused, goal-oriented counselling. You can extend your plan or choose individual sessions depending on your progress and needs.

What techniques do counsellors use to support emotional wellbeing?

We use evidence-based techniques including mindfulness, cognitive-behavioural strategies, acceptance and commitment therapy, stress management tools, and solution-focused approaches. These techniques help clients manage anxiety, build resilience, and navigate life changes effectively.

How do I know if counselling is right for me or my family?

Counselling is suitable if you’re experiencing stress, relationship challenges, grief, life transitions, or family conflict. If you’re unsure, a consultation session can help assess your needs and outline the best approach for your situation.

How can counselling support co-parenting after separation?

Counselling helps parents manage emotions, improve communication, and make thoughtful decisions for the wellbeing of their children. We provide guidance for co-parenting plans, mediation preparation, and conflict resolution.

Can counselling help me improve my emotional resilience?

Absolutely. Counselling equips you with practical tools to manage stress, navigate challenges, and respond to life events with greater confidence. Building emotional resilience enhances both personal wellbeing and relationships.

How soon will I see results from counselling?

Results vary depending on your goals and engagement. Many clients notice improvements in emotional clarity, coping skills, and stress management within a few sessions, while deeper behavioural changes may take longer.

Can children or teenagers attend counselling sessions?

Yes. Counselling is suitable for children and teens experiencing emotional, behavioural, or family challenges. Sessions are tailored to age, developmental needs, and communication style to ensure effective support.

Can counselling help me adjust to major life changes like separation, grief, or career transitions?

Absolutely. Counselling provides guidance, support, and practical strategies to manage change. Whether you are dealing with separation, family conflict, bereavement, or career shifts, we help you build coping skills and move forward with clarity.

What’s the difference between counselling and coaching?

Counselling explores emotional and psychological issues, while coaching focuses on future goals, mindset, and performance. We integrate both where appropriate.

Can counselling help me set boundaries with my partner, family, or work?

Yes. Counselling guides you in identifying personal limits, communicating boundaries effectively, and maintaining healthier relationships both personally and professionally.

Do you offer online (telehealth) sessions?

Yes, telehealth is highly in demand. We offer secure online counselling sessions for clients who prefer or require flexibility and privacy.

Can I get affordable counselling online in Australia?

Yes. Siluna Mind offers competitive rates and flexible counselling packages for online sessions, making professional support accessible for individuals, couples, and families across Australia.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is central to counselling. The only exceptions are where there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, known child abuse, or as required by law.

How do I know if online counselling is safe and confidential?

We use secure, encrypted telehealth platforms to protect your privacy. Online counselling adheres to the same ethical and professional standards as in-person sessions, ensuring your information remains confidential.

Do you offer family counselling or mediation?

We offer counselling for individuals who are preparing for, or currently involved in, an alternative Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) or mediation process. These sessions help you feel emotionally prepared before, during, and after mediation.

Through our work together, you’ll learn to approach discussions with greater emotional grounding, develop a solution-focused mindset, and use mindfulness strategies to stay calm and centred. We also support you in adjusting to any life changes that may follow the mediation process — helping you move forward with clarity and confidence.

What is Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) and how can counselling help me prepare?

Family Dispute Resolution is a structured process that helps separated or separating couples resolve parenting or property disputes without going to court. Counselling can help you prepare emotionally, develop a solution-focused mindset, and stay calm during mediation.

How do I manage stress, anxiety, and burnout with counselling?

Stress and burnout are common in busy or high-pressure lives. Counselling provides strategies to manage anxiety, build emotional resilience, and restore balance. Our stress management counselling includes mindfulness techniques, coping strategies, and personalised guidance for long-term wellbeing.
